Tilt Tables are an ergonomic must-have in manufacturing. Similar to tilt carts, these tables offer even greater ergonomic benefits by providing custom pick heights and greater tilt control, ensuring safer, more efficient operations at workstations.

Types of Tilt Tables in Manufacturing

Tilt tables are available with three tilt styles: mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic assist. Here’s a breakdown of the key differences:

Mechanical Tilt Tables

Mechanical tilt tables are gravity-powered, meaning the operator uses gravity to tilt and lock it in place, then unlocks it and manually pushes it back to neutral. While less expensive than tilt dollies or pneumatic tilt tables, these types of tables are more limited in functionality and are better suited for use in conjunction with forklifts. Mechanical tilt tables have three positions: full 30-degree tilt, 45-degree tilt, or neutral. They can’t be stopped at another degree of tilt.

A mechanical tilt table is ideal for forklift operations in which the entire manufacturing setting is on the same level. They are a robust, affordable option without bells and whistles, giving you a solid and reliable performance with minimal maintenance.

Pneumatic Tilt Tables

Pneumatic tilt tables have an air-powered tilt. Rather than relying on manpower and gravity, the operator uses a hand or foot lever (a “deadman valve”) to tilt the table forward and back. One of the biggest benefits of pneumatic tilt tables is that they can be stopped at multiple increments of tilt, as they stop moving when pressure is removed from the valve.

If you manufacture particularly heavy parts and equipment, pneumatic tilt tables are built to bear the weight of your operation. The high level of control over the degree of tilt, and reduced strain on operators, make pneumatic tilt tables perfect for handling the heaviest of loads.

Hydraulic Assist Tilt Tables

Hydraulic assist tilt tables are essentially tilt carts without the wheels. They have hydraulic cylinders that assist with tilting, but it isn’t a true hydraulic tilt. The cylinder on a hydraulic assist tilt table tempers the tilting speed to slow its gravity-powered tilt and make adjustments easier.

These tilt tables feature an adjustable stop point for accurate, custom tilt settings with minimal deviation. They also come in 60-degree options for greater tilt needs.

Factors for Determining the Right Tilt Table

Ultimately, your choice of tilt table comes down to preference and use case. Tilt tables are a great option for any manufacturing operation where forklifts are the main means of transporting parts, equipment, and containers. Here are some other factors to consider when choosing the right tilt tables to ergonomically support your lineside operators:

Custom Tilt vs. Standard Tilt

Another consideration is how much you want to customize the tilt angle. If you’re going to only ever use the tilt table at neutral or full-tilt (30 or 60 degrees), any tilt table should get the job done. If you need to adjust the tilt angle between the maximum tilt and neutral, both pneumatic and hydraulic assist can be custom-tilted, but pneumatic will show slightly more deviation if you need an exact mid-tilt. This need for exact tilt angles is most common when lining a container up with a conveyor belt. In contrast, pneumatic tilt tables are ideal for allowing operators to customize their preferred pick angle.

Level of Control

If you’re looking for fully automated tilt tables, you won’t find that here. For automotive production and production facilities with workers present, it’s neither cost-effective nor necessary to involve AI or automation in tilt tables. All of our tilt tables are controlled with foot pedals or hand valves for simple, efficient functionality that gets the job done without all the bells and whistles. You don’t have to plug a computer into it or risk a bug in the automated process impacting production. All the control is in the operator’s hands, giving you a solution that is as simple and maintenance-free as possible.
